In 2004, my husband and I found out we were pregnant with our first child (hooray!!). About the same time, we decided to move to the Seattle area and pursue a new business opportunity in advertising. Without doctor or care references, we packed up and moved to Mill Creek/Snohomish in July 2004. It was a bit scary not knowing anything about the hospitals or doctors in our area ~ but soon I would find a midwife from a referral and thus began my journey into the “birth world!” After becoming educated in doula care, we chose to hire a doula and she was such a wonderful support when we had our first son, Josiah, in October of that year.
After accomplishing such an amazing feat (childbirth!), I knew that doula care was something really special and would love to be a part of, but didn’t really think of pursuing it yet. Good thing, because we were quickly pregnant with our second baby and Justus was born just 14-1/2 months after his brother in January 2006! However, Justus was born one month early via C-section and only because of a placental abruption; then my baby almost didn’t make it and ended up staying a month in NICU! Yikes! The emergency surgery happened so quickly, I had no time to call my doula and tell her I needed her, and thus was put through a terriblytraumatic experience with VERY little emotional support. Now I know I would have healed emotionally and physically faster had she been there …
During the two years after Justus was born, I healed, met more doulas, learned more about birth and postpartum emotional trauma (almost identical to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), and felt even more strongly that doula care was the passion my heart was yearning for all along. In May 2008 I completed DONA International approved Birth Doula Training at Seattle Midwifery School and began supporting birthing moms immediately. Since my training I have served over 35 families and continue to love what I do! I am a member of and certified with both PALS (Pacific Association for Labor Support) & DONA International.
Additionally, I have been educated in and am passionate about breastfeeding, lactation & feeding support and plan to work toward my official lactation certification in order to counsel and educate families. Also, I believe in and have practiced the methods of Dr. Harvey Karp (known for his book, “The Happiest Baby on the Block”) and have embraced his training to become a certified Happiest Baby Educator. I continually read books, research, and attend educational seminars and conferences whenever possible to further my knowledge and expand my network of experienced doulas, nurses, midwives & educators who offer mentorship and support.
But MOST importantly, I believe with all of my heart, that EVERY woman deserves a doula … and I hope to be the one to serve your needs, dear one! Blessings!!
